Pascal was thrust into the fray for his debut against PSV at short notice,
replacing Martin Keown. But the 28-year-old summer signing from Lille
responded with a calm, assured display. He showed similar strength at Leeds
a few days later.

He continued with his unfussy, committed performances throughout Keown three
-month absence and formed a tight central defensive unit with Sol Campbell.
