Bentley: I won't sit around again at Highbury

Talented midfielder David Bentley is determined to win his first-team place
with Arsenal after a loan season at Norwich.

The clock is ticking for David Bentley. Naturally gifted but incredibly
driven, Arsenal's precocious midfielder is no longer prepared to play the
waiting game. Having tasted the experience of regular first-team football at
Norwich, who he joined on a season-long loan last summer, Bentley will return
to Highbury next month with his career at the crossroads.

Arsene Wenger, well known for his foresight, is expected to outline his
future plans for a player whose ability brought comparisons with Dennis
Bergkamp when he scored an exquisite goal against Middlesbrough last year.

Bentley was a fledgling talent then, willing, if not content, to be a
peripheral figure at Highbury. But times have changed and after a season at
Carrow Road he is anxious to spend the next campaign playing and not watching
football on Saturday afternoons.

Bentley said: "I love the football club and the fans, I grew up watching
Arsenal, but at the end of the day if I'm not going to be given a chance for
whatever reason then I'll have to go somewhere else, and I'm not fazed by
that.

"I'll speak to Arsenal and see what they have got to say, but maybe my future
lies somewhere else.

"At Arsenal no one is guaranteed to play every week, but I just want to be
given a chance to play every week. If I'm not being successful on the pitch
and [Arsene] doesn't pick me then fair enough. I'll be the first one to hold
my hands up.

"But I don't want to be playing reserve team football anymore and I won't be
playing reserve team football next year. I've moved on from that definitely.
I'm not going to go back and just sit about next year."

Bentley, who admitted that he has no interest in spending another season on
loan, expects to return for Norwich against Manchester United tomorrow after
recovering from a knee injury that has sidelined him for almost three months.

This season has been testing for Norwich and, at times, Bentley. The 20-year-
old midfielder has been influential in some games while other matches have
passed him by.

Bentley admits that he has not had the impact he would have hoped for, though
playing for a team for whom points are treated like precious gems is not the
easiest environment in which to shine.

He said: "When you are away from home fighting out draws there's no time for
you prancing about on the ball. It's about digging in and getting the result,
and that's what I've found myself doing a lot. You don't get in a position
where you are 3-0 or 4-0 up like you are at Arsenal when you can do all the
tricks that you want."

Nevertheless, Bentley has no reservations about joining Norwich and claims
that he is a much improved player for the experience. "I have been down at
the bottom of the league but I have actually enjoyed being in and around
first-team football," he said.

"Being at Norwich things are hard, you have to dig deep and sometimes you
don't get to play the football you want to play, but it's been an enjoyable
time and I've learned a different side to the game.

"I've learned how to lose and at Arsenal that losing element wasn't a big
thing for me. It's built my character and hopefully the player that I'm going
to be in the future."

While Bentley has been away from Highbury, two young players have progressed
to feature regularly in the first-team. Cesc Fabregas and Mathieu Flamini
have made the most of their opportunity to impress, though Bentley is
anything but resentful. "There's no frustration on my part," he said. "Good
luck to them. They're good players."

Fabregas and Flamini do, though, have a definitive position on the field,
unlike Bentley, who has played on the right for Norwich this season but
believes that he might be better employed further infield.

He also accepts, much to his frustration, that his style of play can be
problematic for managers. "It's always that way with players who want to be
on the ball," said Bentley.

"The English game is just not ready for it. It's the same with Joe Cole, they
just don't know where to play him."

Cole, however, has done much to dispel the notion that he is a maverick, who
cannot conform to a team framework.

Indeed, in many ways the Chelsea midfielder's progress should be a source of
encouragement to Bentley, though only if he gets the chance to do what he
loves most.

"I want to enjoy my football and I want to enjoy my life and to do that I
have got to have a game on a Saturday," he said.
