Ryan Smith aims to shine By Mohsin Khan
Following the emergence of Philippe Senderos and Cesc Fabregas last
season, another young Gunner is hoping to make his mark this year.
Eighteen-year-old Ryan Smith battled back from a potentially
career-threatening cruciate ligament injury to play a role in all three
of Arsenal’s Carling Cup fixtures last term — a feat he hopes to
repeat this season.
The Islington-born left winger told Arsenal.com: "I’ve enjoyed playing
in the Carling Cup and it would be nice if I can play in that again. I
hope to really make an impact this year. I want people to know who I am.”
Smith, who made his full debut at just 16 against Rotherham at Highbury
in the Carling Cup in 2003, made 12 appearances for the Reserves last
season following his return to fitness, scoring once.
He also managed one goal in three appearances in the FA Youth Cup before
travelling with England to the European Under-19 Championships in
Northern Ireland in July.
Smith helped England progress to the Final, playing in the first two group
games before coming on as a substitute in the Final itself. Looking back,
he feels the tournament was a valuable stage in his development.
“Playing with the England Under-19s was a very good experience.”
said Smith.
“There is quite a difference between international football and club
football. You’re playing [against] all the best teams from Europe so
you can learn a lot.”
The fleet-footed Smith exhibits a rather more mature attitude than his
tender years may suggest. “No matter who you are in football you never
stop learning,” he concluded. “You’re always picking stuff up.”
