Everton v Arsenal: Player Ratings
Mark Brus
Sunday, 15 August 2004 7:09 PM BST
An impressive display today from the champions to beat Everton 4-1
in this season's opening game at Goodison Park. Here is how our players
rated.
Jens Lehmann – 7.5 –
Didn't have very much to do, but made a few good saves. Could've perhaps
done better on their goal, but looks solid.
Lauren – 7.5 –
Got forward well, but caught out of position once or twice, played a part
in our second goal and was generally good.
Kolo Toure – 8 –
Better today, some very good challenges, particularly on McFadden in a
promising attack for the home side. Strong in the air and looked good as
always.
Pascal Cygan – 7.5 –
Another good performance today, but could've conceded us a few penalties
with his shirt tugging and shoving. Will have to calm down, but that was
his only weakness today.
Ashley Cole – 7.5 –
Didn't get forward much today, but was solid at the back. Backed off a
bit rather than making the challenge during an attack which lead to their
goal. When he did get forward he was a threat and unlucky to hit the bar.
Freddie Ljungberg – 8 –
A lively performance from him today, especially from the start. Got a lot
of the ball and used it well. Great play and cross for Reyes' goal and
finished his goal well too. I have high hopes for him this season.
Gilberto – 8 –
Another sound performance until going off injured. Quiet, but effective.
Not quite as noticeable as he was in the Community Shield, but did well.
Hopefully his injury isn't too bad.
Cesc Fabregas – 8.5 –
Hard to believe this kid is only 17. Another brilliant performance, and
I don't just mean by 17 year old standards. He looked a fine Premiership
midfielder, strong challenges, good passing except perhaps one or two,
and had some good chances to score. A real talent who will be making the
likes of Edu and Flamini fight for a place in this team.
Jose Antonio Reyes – 8.5 –
I was disappointed that Wenger took him off. He was a threat all the way
through and scored a brilliant headed goal, which us Arsenal fans don't
see a lot of. Went on a great run past the Everton defence, perhaps took
a touch too many. Also played a part in our opening goal.
Dennis Bergkamp – 9 –
Another case in which age can be deceiving. Involved with everything
today, great composure for his goal. Took a touch and then fired it in.
Really lead by example. He is still the master.
Thierry Henry – 8 –
Still doesn't look himself, but we can forgive him for that. Clever pass
to Bergy for our opening goal and to Freddie for our third. Had a great
chance to score, but took too many touches. He will be back to his best
soon, I'm sure.
Robert Pires – 7 –
Came on after about an hour and didn't do very much apart from score, but
that's hardly bad. He earns himself a 7.
Jermaine Pennant – 6 –
Replaced Ljungberg on the right after an hour. Some good touches, but
didn't do anything impressive.
Mathieu Flamini – 6.5 –
Had he started, I imagine he would've done better. Came on for the final
25 minutes for the injured Gilberto. Didn't do much except give away free
kicks. Didn't get involved as much as I had hoped.
Not at our best today despite the score line but some good football on
display and more encouraging performances from young Spaniards Reyes and
Fabregas. A good start to the season from the champions. Boro at home next.
