Wenger: We were over-cautious
by Alex Dunn - Last Updated 30 Sep 2004
RosenborgArsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes his side were over-cautious
after they squandered a 1-0 lead against Norwegian outfit Rosenborg.
The North London side were never at their best and it was no surprise when
Roar Strand netted a second-half leveller.
However, despite a disappointing result, Wenger's side still head Group E
with four points from two matches.
"It is disappointing to get a draw because we created a lot, but on the
other hand, Rosenborg did try for 90 minutes and went for every ball and
gave an outstanding physical performance,'' conceded Wenger.
"They had an outstanding, committed performance and played the type of
game where if you make one mistake you will be punished because they are
very direct.
"On our side, I feel that at 1-0 we were not positive enough and wanted
to maybe keep the score. We came into the game again at 1-1 and in the
last 30 minutes could have won the game.
"We felt we controlled the game and maybe subconsciously we did not need
to push up a gear.
"I feel we did not go forward enough and were a little bit within ourselves
when we were 1-0 up, we were a little bit cautious.
"You want to take the points when you can, and tonight we should have had
three. That is where we can learn, I feel, that we were a little bit too
comfortable at 1-0 maybe."
Rosenborg Coach Ola By Rise was unsurprisingly proud of his side's
performance and praised his players' exertions.
"It was a very good result for us. We played against one of the best teams
in Europe,'' said By Rise.
"I think we deserved the equaliser, but afterwards they played a lot
faster and it is easy to see that they can play football at a very high
European level, sometimes world class, so I am happy that we came away
from it 1-1."

"We will try, but football is not self service - you put the
coins in and get out a bar of chocolate, it is not like that.
It is a hard effort and what we can do is try our best and
keep a desire to improve."
- Arsene Wenger
