Jack Wilshere believes Carling Cup win could spark more Arsenal glory
Jack Wilshere believes the Carling Cup can provide a springboard for
Arsenal's pursuit of the Premier League title this season as the club aim to
end a six-year trophy drought by prevailing in the season's first final next
month.
The 19-year-old England midfielder acknowledged the "hunger" within Arsène
Wenger's squad to lift silverware in the wake of the semi-final victory over
Ipswich Town last night, having forgotten what the sensation of winning
trophies feels like. Four years after missing out on the Carling Cup to
Chelsea in Cardiff, Arsenal will compete in their first Wembley final since
1998, intent in the meantime upon maintaining their pursuit of Manchester
United in the Premier League.
"Winning trophies breeds confidence and, if we get confident for the rest of
the season, then who knows what could happen?" Wilshere said. "This is a
great opportunity to win a trophy. To go on and win it would be massive for
the club. Any trophy is a trophy and it's five years since we won our last
one. If we win one, hopefully it will become more.
"I don't think there is a frustration in the dressing room [regarding the
club's trophyless run], but I just think there is more of a hunger there.
It's been so long we've almost forgotten what it's like. We need to bring
that back into the club. This is a big football club and we need to win
trophies. If we win in February it will give us confidence for the rest of
the season."
Arsenal's last trophy was the FA Cup in 2005, when Manchester United were
overcome on penalties at Cardiff, after a goalless draw. "I was about 13 at
home with my family and I remember watching it on the television when Patrick
Vieira scored the last penalty," Wilshere said.
"You saw what it meant to them and we're trying to do that again. Being part
of the team, they are all feeling it and are hungry to win trophies. That's
what this club is about and we need to do that.
"We know we're going to Wembley now. We know our opponents will be strong on
the day. We'll look forward to the Premier League games and, when it comes
along, we'll be ready for the final.
"I came on at Wembley a couple of months ago for my England debut, even if it
was only for 10 minutes. This will be my first cup final and hopefully my
first full game at Wembley. It will be brilliant, a massive day for me and my
family and hopefully we can go on and win."

歲小將威爾希爾來說，這場決賽意義非凡。在這塊英格蘭足球的聖地，小威有望迎來他職
業生涯第一個杯賽決賽，這同時也是他第一次身披阿森納戰袍出現在溫布利球場。
威爾希爾說道：「在幾個月前我在溫布利上演了自己國家隊的處子秀，即便只有10分鐘。
而接下來的這場決賽，將是我職業生涯第一個杯賽的決賽，真希望我能在溫布利打滿90分
鐘，對我和我的家人來說這將是意義非凡的一天，但願我們在2月27日能夠奪冠。」對威
爾希爾來說，溫布利球場的確有不同尋常的意義。2010年8月11日在英格蘭與匈牙利的比
賽中，威爾希爾第83分鐘換下傑拉德，從而上演了自己國家隊的處子秀。
阿森納也期望能在這塊聖地中再度奪魁，槍手上一次在溫布利踢杯賽的決賽，那還要追溯
到1997-98賽季的足總杯，那場比賽憑藉奧維馬斯和阿內爾卡的進球，溫格的球隊2-0取勝
紐卡斯爾，在老溫布利捧杯。但此後由於溫布利球場改建，足總杯和聯賽杯決賽被安排在
加迪夫千年球場舉行。
所以2000-01賽、2001-02賽季、2002-03賽季、2004-05賽季的足總杯決賽，以及2006-07
賽季聯賽杯決賽，阿森納都是在千年球場與對手交鋒。2007年新溫布利球場開放，但是阿
森納在近年來從未闖進過國內杯賽的決賽。不過2008-09賽季，阿森納打入足總杯半決賽
，由此有了在新溫布利球場表現的機會，可惜他們1-2不敵切爾西。
擊敗伊普斯維奇之後，阿森納終於迎來了再度捧杯的大好良機，威爾希爾說道：「這是獲
得榮譽的好機會，拿下一個冠軍對俱樂部來說非常重要。聯賽杯冠軍畢竟也是個冠軍，我
們已經5年多未奪冠了。如果有了第一個，接下來就好辦多了。」
對於阿森納近年來最後一個榮譽（2005年足總杯冠軍），威爾希爾記憶猶新：「那時候我
剛13歲，我和我家人在電視機前觀看了這場比賽，我記得維埃拉將最後一個點球踢進。你
知道那冠軍對他們意味著什麼。現在我們將重複他們的輝煌，現在我已經是球隊中的一份
子了，我能感覺到大夥對冠軍的飢渴。」
