Franz Beckenbauer has revealed that he approached Arsenal boss Arsene
Wenger about managing Germany last summer.
Beckenbauer, who guided Germany to victory in the 1990 World Cup, said
he rang Wenger after Rudi Voeller resigned following a poor Euro 2004
campaign.
"I had a quick talk to Arsene because I am a very good friend of his,"
Beckenbauer told BBC Radio Five Live.
"But he said, 'No, of course it's a great challenge to manage Germany
but I'm happy at Arsenal'."
Beckenbauer helped Germany win the World Cup in 1974 as a defender before
his victory at Italia '90 as manager.
The 58-year-old is now the president of the 2006 World Cup organising
committee and has influence with the German Football Association.
"I am a very good friend with Arsene," added the German.
"And I spoke to him after Rudi left the German national side after a
disappointing performance in Portugal."
Wenger was also linked with the France job after Jacques Santini opted
to move to Tottenham.
But the Highbury boss decided to stay on with Arsenal and last week s
igned a new contract, which will run until May 2008.
Former Germany and Spurs striker Jurgen Klinsmann has since been appointed
as the German coach.
