雷耶斯說,他對到OT踢比賽,他一點也不害怕。
REYES: I'M NOT AFRAID
Oct 24 2004
THEY CAN SHOUT AND SPIT AT ME BUT THEY DON'T HAVE A GUN TO SHOOT ME,
SO WHY SHOULD I BE AFRAID?
Paul Mccarthy
JOSE ANTONIO REYES knows the passion and prejudices Arsenal will
face when he goes to Old Trafford for the first time today.
And he won't be intimated.
Reyes wasn't even an innocent by-stander during the battle of Old
Trafford, before emerging from Seville as a talent to compare with
Wayne Rooney.
Now, on the eve of a match which will either re-ignite the inferno
or lay its memory to rest, Reyes is aware of the ferocity that will
face him.
"I've heard about Old Trafford, I know how passionate the fans there
can be," he concedes. "But what can they do to me? They can shout at
me, they can spit at me but they haven't got a gun to shoot me, so
why should I be afraid?
"I know it's a special match and it will make a huge impact even in
Spain but I can't read the English newspapers and I can't understand
English television, so I haven't let anything affect me. I try to be
very calm and cool and I don't let things over-excite me at any time.
If I let myself get like that then perhaps I will lose something from
my game.
"All I know about the match is what I've heard from the other players
and I have to say they've been absolutely normal all week. That is
the important thing, to treat this game as another ordinary game that
we have to try and win."
It's a commendable attitude and one that the incredibly laid-back
Spaniard is determined to maintain up to kick off and beyond. Yet the
prospect of lining up in a match that brings together the greatest
the Premiership has to offer cannot help but excite his Latin blood,
as he explains.
"There are so many great players on both sides that you know it will
be a special occasion," he admits.
"When I look to either side of me and see Thierry Henry, Dennis
Bergkamp and Robert Pires and then on the other team there is Roy Keane,
Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney, it means so much.
"I know there are comparisons between myself and Rooney, and I'm very
proud for them to be made because he is a great player. I think we are
both still young and we want to play with freedom and joy that comes
naturally to us.
"To be honest, I hadn't heard anything about him until I came to England
but then I was immediately aware of him because of the special things
he can do.
"He wasn't a big name in Spain until Euro 2004 when he made such an
impact that you couldn't ignore him.
"I didn't watch many of the matches in the summer because I wasn't
involved with Spain and I tried to get away from it all, but I was on
holiday in Marbella and I only heard one name ... Rooney!
"That's when I heard about him all the time - and you could see why.
The things he did in that tournament were great and it's an honour to
be talked about in comparison with him."
But Reyes retains his ultimate respect for ... Thierry Henry.
After his recent vanquishing of Charlton, Henry spoke long and glowingly
of the understanding he's quickly established with Reyes.
"I love playing with Jose," Henry insisted. "He has such a natural beauty
to his game that I want to try and impress him with every goal I score -
and I think he wants to do the same for me."
The smile that lights up the 21-year-old's face when informed of Henry's
compliment out-shines even the luscious gold bracelet which dangles from
his wrist and the watch the size of a soup bowl.
"Yes, it's amazing how quickly Thierry and I have built an understanding,
but how difficult can it be playing with someone like him? He makes
everything so easy, all I have to do is look up and he is there, waiting
for a pass.
"I know as soon as I give him the ball something special will happen. I
have confidence in him and I hope he has confidence in me because we both
like to play the same way.
"We play to win but we also play to entertain and give people joy. If you
can't do that, what is the point?
"The whole team plays like that and that is part of our success. Arsene
Wenger doesn't tie us down, he doesn't give us specific jobs to do and
he doesn't try to put us in a box.
"All he wants us to do is work hard and express ourselves. If we do that
then we have to have the confidence we can be successful.
"I thought it would be hard to break into such a huge club yet I was made
to feel like a member of the family from the start. That made me feel
special, too.
"Now I am at home. My family come over regularly and I speak to them all
the time on the phone but this is where I am happiest, Arsenal is where I
am comfortable - and nothing is going to change that."

Because right now this is Henry's world...
The rest of us only live in it.
