We wanted Bergkamp - Allardyce
15 07 2003
Sam Allardyce has revealed he "came close" to bringing Arsenal striker Dennis
Bergkamp to Bolton.
The Dutch striker, who is currently out of contract at Highbury, had talks
with Allardyce but turned down a move as he did not want to move north.
Allardyce told Bolton's official website, www.bwfc.co.uk: "I came close to
signing Dennis Bergkamp but he was not interested in coming north to play."
He added: "It's disappointing because he would have been a fantastic acquisit-
ion for this football club. He was out of contract at Arsenal and we could
have budgeted for his wages."
It now appears Arsenal and the player have found some common ground and the 34
-year-old star, who has remained in Holland instead of returning to pre-season
training, should return to north London later this week.
His agent Rob Jansen said: "I have a feeling we will solve this within 48 hrs.
Hopefully the outcome will be that Dennis returns on Thursday."
