Arsenal have Taylor-made option
by Ben Blackmore - created on 30 Mar 2005
Stuart Taylor should leave Arsenal for the good of his career - that is the
opinion of former Arsenal goalkeeping coach Bob Wilson.
Wilson spent many years nurturing the talent of Taylor, and with the
youngster's contract due to expire in June, Wilson believes the time has come
for Taylor to show Arsene Wenger what he can do at another club.
Arsenal have struggled in the goalkeeping department all season, with Jens
Lehmann and Manuel Almunia making some crucial errors. However, Wenger has
never turned to his young Englishman, a decision which clearly rankles with
Wilson.
"The buck stops with Arsene and it is the one area that he and I used to
disagree about," revealed Bob Wilson to Sky Sports News.
"Everybody knows that I brought Stuart through myself from age 14 and I just
would've liked to see him get the chance which hasn't happened this season."
And Wilson believes that one club is going to be very fortunate to sign the
former England Under-21 international.
"He's technically an outstanding young keeper, still only 24 and maybe it's
time to move on. I don't know about him never getting a chance, things change
so quickly in football and he got a champion's medal two or three seasons
back when there was an injury to Seaman and Wright. He came in and performed
absolutely brilliantly.
"I do think in his case now that it would be fairly clear that he will
probably need to go elsewhere to show what he can do and I have absolutely no
doubt that we will hear a lot about Stuart Taylor."
If Taylor does leave Arsenal in the summer, he will take with him only a
handful of experience after only playing in 46 league games in eight years -
30 of which were played whilst on loan away from Highbury.
