Edu faces fitness test before Bayern

Tomorrow morning, while his team-mates are preparing for the home
game with Portsmouth, Edu will be undergoing a stringent fitness test
that will decide his involvement in Wednesday’s crucial Champions
League tie with Bayern Munich.
The Brazilian midfielder will definitely miss the game this weekend and
his participation in midweek hinges on tomorrow’s examination. The last
time Arsenal fans saw the 26-year-old he was hobbling off in the first
leg at Munich after aggravating his hamstring injury.
“Edu is progressing well in training,” said Arsene Wenger at his usual
pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon. “He is short for
tomorrow but he will have a big test in the morning.
“It is one of those where you toss a coin. The decision I have to make,
if he comes through the test, is can he get back into the game.
“It is difficult to replicate the intensity of a Champions League game
in training. But if he comes through tomorrow morning then I will
consider him.”
Elsewhere, fellow Brazilian Gilberto is still four weeks from returning.
He has been absent since September with a fractured vertebrae.
Ashley Cole has shaken off his hamstring strain and is expected to play
against Portsmouth while Thierry Henry should return after missing the
midweek victory at Sheffield United with an Achilles problem.
Robin van Persie and Quincy are vying for the berth alongside the
Frenchman. Jeremie Aliadiere is not included in that equation as he
is still regaining match fitness after six months out.
Robert Pires is expected to be out for a further fortnight with an
ankle injury.
