German sweeping legend Franz Beckenbauer has launched a blistering
attack on both German national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann and Arsenal
goalkeeper Jens Lehmann after Sepp Maier's resignation as national
team goalkeeping coach this weekend.
Beckenbauer, the legendary 1974 World Cup-winning skipper, told the
media that the rivalry between Oliver Kahn and Lehmann for the number
one shirt is damaging the side: "There’s a danger that their battle
is going to be a growing burden on the team." He went on to question
Klinsmann's judgement in the matter by saying: If Jurgen Klinsmann
is really going to let them battle it out until 2006 he should at
least be fair about it. I have my doubts about that."
He then attacked Lehmann's record: "Lehmann had a strong performance
in Tehran, but what has he accomplished in his career? Nothing,
aside from a few international matches and one English championship
at Arsenal," said the 1990 World Cup-winning coach.
