Wenger's Pennant admission

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that he nearly gave
Jermaine Pennant a new contract at Highbury.

"He was very close to a new contract, but when that story happened
with his accident in the morning, I took it as a sign that this guy
cannot wait anymore and I let him go.

"I knew he would make a career as a Premier League player, but it was
very difficult to predict where he would make it - at Arsenal or Birmingham.

"I knew he had the talent, but I also knew that if I kept him here and
he didn't play, that it would kill him.

"I had to make that choice. If one day he really explodes, then he can
still come back or go to a bigger club (than Birmingham).

"I would rather that than be responsible for a player who cannot cope
with the situation anymore.
