Gilberto could be out for season
Arsenal's Brazilian midfielder Gilberto Silva could be out for the
rest of the season with a back injury.
Gilberto was expected to return at the end of this month but Gunners
boss Arsene Wenger said his recovery has not gone according to plan.
Wenger explained: "We don't think that it is career-threatening but
it is season-threatening.
"If in the next six weeks the bone has not completely grown together
we have to give him three months more."
The 27-year-old's injury means Wenger has only two of his five central
midfielders fit for Saturday's game against West Brom.
Fellow Brazilian Edu is out for another three weeks after breaking a
toe in last week's League Cup win over Everton.
And 20-year-old Frenchman Mathieu Flamini is out until next week with
a knee problem leaving only skipper Patrick Vieira and Francesc Fabregas
fit.
Wenger added: "It is not ideal. Fabregas played on Saturday, on Tuesday
(for Spain's under-21s) and he'll play tomorrow, Wednesday and on Sunday
- and he's only 17."
