MATCH REPORTS - Arsene Wenger, as he usually does, sent out a vastly
inexperienced Arsenal side in the Carling Cup third round tie at
Manchester City.
There were a few familiar names in the lineup. Pascal Cygan, Francesc
Fabregas and Jermaine Pennant have all had their fair share of Premiership
appearances, but apart from those three, it was practically a reserve
side at the City of Manchester Stadium.
The youngsters came out on top, though. Robin van Persie scored his first
Arsenal goal to give the Gunners an unexpected lead on 78 minutes and then
substitute Daniel Karbassiyoon, another debutant, fired home from a tight
angle right at the death to put the match beyond doubt. Robbie Fowler
scored a free kick in stoppage time for the home side, but it was mere
consolation for Kevin Keegan's men.
Arsenal, who with the same approach last season managed to reach the semi-finals,
showed again what quality youth they have developing at Highbury. Here is
how the players rated:
Manuel Almunia - 6.5 - Held on to some shots well, but occasionally lost
communication with his defenders. Couldn't do much with Fowler's free kick
as it was mis-hit anyway.
Justin Hoyte - 7 - A solid defensive display. No-nonsense clearances and
generally impressive despite not being able to get forward often.
Phillipe Senderos - 7.5 - Commanding performance from a very promising talent.
Looked rather comfortable throughout the match and did his job well.
Pascal Cygan - 8 - Captain for the night and put in a very impressive
performance. A good experienced player to have on the pitch with all the youth
out there.
Sebastian Larsson - 8 - Not naturally a left-back, not even left footed, but
kept Willo Flood and Shaun Wright-Phillips very quiet on the right flank.
Didn't get forward much either, but his defending was spot-on, considering
he plays a midfield role for the Reserves.
Jermaine Pennant - 8 - One of our more experienced youngsters. Started on the
right, but played the way Wenger likes as he drifted into the middle and even
out to the left on occasions to get himself into the game. Very influencial
and knowing this was a chance for him to impress, he took the chance.
Mathieu Flamini - 7 - Nothing special, but that's not really his job. Had a
couple of shots from long range and played a very good part in van Persie's
opener.
Francesc Fabregas - 7.5 - Not as glamarous as he is when surrounded by the
more experienced players, but did a very good job as usual with neat passing,
including a clever through-ball for Karbassiyoon's goal.

Ryan Smith - 6.5 - Didn't get very much of the ball, but looked good when he
had it. The kind who likes to run at defenders, but for his first proper game
since his return from injury, he did well. Went off injured on 61 minutes.
Robin van Persie - 7.5 - Not the performance I expected from him, but it was
only his first start for the club and he marked it with a well-taken goal.
Some nice touches throughout the match, but I think there is more to come
from him.
RVP打得也是普普通通。
Arturo Lupoli - 5.5 - The potential is there, but at only 17 he still needs
time. The step-up from Reserve level to first team football showed, but he did
enough to show he is one for the future with some decent shots and awareness
with his passing. Subbed off on 82 minutes.
Quincy Owusu-Abeyie - 7 - I don't think I'd be exaggerating if I said the game
changed when he came on (For Smith on 61 minutes). I didn't think much of him
last year, but he has cut out the step overs and gets on with it. Showed great
pace and confidence and provided our attack with what it was lacking.

Daniel Karbassiyoon - 7 - The versatile American who replaced Lupoli on 82
minutes, didn't need much time to settle with an excellent goal at the death.
Very difficult to finish from that sort of angle, but he didn't panic and took
his goal very well and may just have secured him a place in the team, or at
least the bench, for the next round, because I doubt he would've played if Gael
Clichy was fit.
出人意料的，左後衛居然是預備隊打左中場的Larsson，這個瑞典人沒打過這位置，
但是面對曼市的SWP等右翼，他表現還是不錯。但預計如果下一輪Clichy夠fit的話，
拉森應該還是會被取代。
Johan Djourou - Replaced Pennant right at the end, so didn't do anything worthy
of note.
My Man of the Match vote would go to Sebastian Larsson, who continued his fine
Reserve form tonight in an unfamilar position, but praise all-round for this
talented group of youngsters for beating a Premiership side away from home so
comfortably.
作者認為該場槍手的MoM應該是Larsson.
Arsenal have been drawn at home to Everton for the fourth round. More chances
for the youngsters to impress against Premiership opposition.
