Did Ichiro get the Bonds treatment?
He is walked three times and stays stuck on 233 hits
By Jim Street / MLB.com
SEATTLE -- Don't tell Ichiro Suzuki that a walk is as good as a hit.
The Mariners right fielder, who is trying to set a Major League record for
most hits in a season, walked a season-high three times Thursday night,
leaving him with two official at-bats to move closer to an 84-year-old
record.
But he grounded out to first base in the seventh inning and reached on an
error in the ninth inning, leaving him with 233 hits and 16 games remaining
to get the 25 hits he needs to eclipse the record George Sisler has owned
since 1920, when he amassed 257 hits in 154 games.
Ichiro went into the series finale against the playoff-contending Angels with
10 hits in 17 career at-bats against former teammate Aaron Sele, who used
some "Barry Bonds strategy" on Ichiro.
After walking on a full-count pitch in the first inning, Ichiro was given an
intentional walk in the second and fourth innings -- his 13th and 14th
intentional walks of the season. The second came after the first three
pitches missed the strike zone.
In each case, first base was open and the strategy worked as Randy Winn
struck out to end the second inning and grounded out to end the fourth.
A conference on the mound preceded the fourth-inning at-bat.
"We wanted to go out and see how Aaron felt about whether he wanted to pitch
around him," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "As [pitching coach Bud Black
and Sele] were talking, it became evident in that situation, that early in
the game, it was probably better not to challenge him and not even give him
anything that he could extend his arms and square up.
"He's a lot like Vlad [Vladimir Guerrero] in that way, where if you make some
pitches that look like good pitches to anybody else, he has a magical swing
to hit that ball hard. But it's not easy going after Randy Winn, he's having
a terrific year, he's a tough out, but I thought it was better to just start
fresh with Randy and not worry about bouncing a curveball or spot a fastball
swinging the bat as well as Ichiro is."
Sele did as he was instructed.
"It doesn't matter if I'm comfortable [pitching to Ichiro] or not," Sele
said. "It was the manager. They came out and I thought we were going to pitch
to him [in the fourth], but then he changed his mind. He makes the decisions,
not me."
It was the first time since April 12, 2003, that Ichiro walked as many as
three times in a game. The free swinger has walked twice in four games this
season, the most recent coming on June 24 against the Rangers in Arlington.
This was the first time Ichiro received two intentional walks in the same
game and manager Bob Melvin said he wasn't sure if this was an isolated case,
or whether the hit leader faces similar strategy down the road.
"Well, a base was open so I guess it depends," Melvin said. "I don't know.
Certainly, if you get runners on second and third like that in a close game
and have [first base] open, you don't want him to beat you with a hit. But
you don't want to walk him just to walk him. We'll see what happens."
Ichiro said after the game that he wasn't surprised to be walked
intentionally on four pitches in the second inning and was pleased about
remaining patient during the fourth-inning at-bat.
"Of course, I expected it against a playoff-contending team," he said.
Asked about the hit record he's chasing, Ichiro insisted that the pressure
isn't getting to him.
"I'm not feeling that way," he told Japanese reporters. "Probably you [media]
guys are worrying too much about me."
While it's rare when Ichiro walks at all, getting three of them in one game
is extremely rare. But Sisler was something of a free swinger in his day as
well.
The Hall of Fame first baseman walked just 46 times in 631 official plate
appearances in 1920. He batted .407, scored 137 runs, hit 19 home runs (his
single-season high) and drove in 122 runs for the St. Louis Browns.
He deprived Babe Ruth of winning the American League Triple Crown that
season. Ruth hit 54 home runs and drove in 137 runs, but batted .376.
