BALI, Indonesia - Though the complete field for the upcoming Commonwealth
Bank Tournament Of Champions is still somewhat up in the air as the last
International-level tournament of the year takes place in Luxembourg this
week, Tournament Director Kevin Livesey has ended speculation about who will
join defending champion Ana Ivanovic as a wildcard into the event.
The highly sought-after spot has gone to China's Peng Shuai, who has put
together a career-best season, starting 2011 ranked No.72 in the world and
going as high as No.14 the week before the US Open (she is now No.16). She is
only the third Chinese to crack the Top 15, after Li Na and Zheng Jie).
In addition to reaching her fourth WTA final at Brussels, Peng has been to
four semifinals (Auckland, Hobart, Charleston, Birmingham) and another five
quarterfinals (Pattaya City, Doha, Indian Wells, Carlsbad and Cincinnati).
She also scored her best Grand Slam appearances, fourth round finishes at the
Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open. She has won 53 matches in 2011.
"Peng Shuai is not only one of the most talented and exciting players in
Asia, but she had made her mark across the world in both singles and
doubles," Livesey said of the 25-year-old. "She is no stranger to Bali after
she claimed the doubles title in 2008 with partner Hsieh Su-Wei, and we are
confident that she will once again be a fan favorite as she returns to Bali
for the Commonwealth Bank Tournament Of Champions."
Currently leading the way for the six other spots are Marion Bartoli, Andrea
Petkovic, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Sabine Lisicki, Roberta Vinci and Daniela
Hantuchova, but this week's results in Moscow (if Bartoli wins that title she
will qualify for Istanbul and not be able to play in Bali) and Luxembourg
(where Julia Goerges is among those going for the last International-level
title of the year) will determine the complete line-up.
The third annual Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions is scheduled for
November 3 to 6 at the Bali International Convention Centre. Featuring top
WTA players and next generation champions competing in an eight woman, single
elimination singles format (with the singles final and third/fourth-place
play-off on finals day), it offers $600,000 prize money.
