Sanguinetti Fights of Srichaphan in Showy Five Set Marathon
by Erin Gell
Sunday, September 4, 2005
Talk about a dramatic finale. It started out like any other match, but it
took five sets, three tie-breaks, and 4 hours, 24 minutes for Italian veteran
Davide Sanguinetti to dramatically defeat Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan 6-3,
4-6, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5).
The close match played before a near-capacity crowd in Louis Armstrong
Stadium and was an epic battle of endurance and showmanship.
The match had the potential to go either way. Both men had unexpectedly
conquered seeded players on their way into the third round; Sanguinetti ousted
Carlos Moya (No. 31 seed) in four sets, while Srichaphan upset Nikolay
Davydenko (No. 6).
Sanguinetti managed an early break to start the match, and in less than
half an hour the first set was in the bag, 6-3.
Thanks to a string of errors, Srichaphan soon fell behind in set two. But
with his aggressive attacks and returns, it wasn't long before things were
back on serve. The Thai's improved offense paid off when, at 3-3, Srichaphan
broke Sanguinetti's serve and went on to win the second set — much to the
crowd's delight.
Like James Blake's "J Block," Srichaphan also had his own cheering section
— the loud and loyal "Sricha-Fans," who dress in red (a lucky color in
Thailand) and clap thunder sticks for the 26-year-old.
During lengthy third-set rallies, Srichaphan continued to apply pressure.
After sailing so easily through the first set, Sanguinetti showed signs of
frustration with both himself and the chair umpire. Distracted by some calls
he questioned, the Italian dropped a service game to fall behind for the
first time in the third set, only to break back in the next game. Ultimately,
Srichaphan won in a tie-break.
At 33 Sanguinetti is hardly over the hill, but in tennis years that's
practically ancient. He's second in age only to 35 year-old Andre Agassi
among men left in the men's singles draw. But Sanguinetti didn't let his age
get in the way Sunday night.
The sun was setting over Louis Armstrong Stadium as the two entered the
fourth set. Srichaphan took a medical time-out to have a trainer wrap a
bothersome blister on his right foot.
And here's where the fun began. In a tight match already more than three
hours long, the New York crowd started to play their role.
A brazen Sanguinetti started playing to the fans, blowing kisses to the
stands, collapsing onto the ground after long points, even sitting down in an
empty courtside chair to give a security guard a high-five. Srichaphan joined
in the theater, motioning for Sanguinetti's balls to go out, and kissing the
net for helping him out on a shot.
The pair advanced to the second tie-break of the match where Srichaphan
slid into a split reaching for a ball and appeared to suffer a strain in his
thigh. Meanwhile Sanguinetti was chasing down every ball, rallying to avoid
elimination.
On to Act IV: Saguinetti jumped to a quick 4-1 lead over his struggling
opponent. The dogged Italian exhausted himself chasing down balls — perhaps
too much.
Srichaphan won the next three games to re-tie the match. The script called
for the first four sets to be the warm-up, and only in the last did the best
entertainment begin — the kind of tennis where every point was a fight. It
took six deuces before Sanguinetti held serve to go up 6-5. In the next game,
Srichaphan's twelfth ace evened the set 6-6. Then came tie-break number three,
the match's show-stopping number.
As tight as ever, Srichaphan and Sanguinetti slugged their way through
long points. At last Sanguinetti had his first match point at 6-4 in the
tie-break, but Srichaphan warded him off. At 6-5 in the tie-break, Sanguinetti
finally tasted victory and collapsed onto the ground in happiness, exhaustion,
and probably a good amount of disbelief.
This is Sanguinetti's best showing at a Grand Slam since he was a 1998
quarterfinalist Wimbledon.
