Unseeded Srichaphan Ousts No. 6 Davydenko in Straight Sets
by William Toussaint
Friday, September 2, 2005
The way unseeded Paradorn Srichaphan played in his 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 victory
over No. 6 seed Nikolay Davydenko Friday in the second round of the US Open
might cause tennis fans everywhere to pay a bit more attention to the brawny
26-year-old Thai .
Srichaphan employed a powerful forehand against Davydenko, tallying 21
forehand winners and controlling most of the match by making the 24-year-old
Russian scurry and sometimes shrug in exhaustion at the shots he just could
not reach.
"This was the second round and I lost last year in the third round so it was
kind of tough playing a seeded player," said Srichaphan. "But I was kind of
enjoying the match and I tried to play well…I played a really good match
today and especially to win in a stretch like that."
Srichaphan broke Davydenko's serve to win the first set, and then again in
the second set to forego a tie-break. But the match seemed decided when
Srichaphan broke Davydenko's serve for the fourth time, pulling ahead 5-3 in
the third set. Davydenko failed to score a point in the final game.
Srichaphan is quite a celebrity in his hometown of Bangkok, Thailand. In
2002 he was named "Thai of the Year" and graced top magazine covers like Time
Asia as well.
Many of the fans watching the upset that took place in the Grandstand
Stadium wore red outfits and slapped together red ballons to encourage their
hero.
