"The first match is okay for me," said Danai. "Of course it's a tough match, because he's ranked 12 and I'm 190, but I have nothing to lose so I can play my best tennis. I heard that the tickets are sold out, so I hope the Thai fans will support me." Because he is doing double-duty, partnering David Rikl in doubles as well as playing the number one singles, Novak is happy to be playing the first match of the tie. "I'm happy to be starting with the first match because I will have much more rest before the doubles," said Novak. "I'm the favourite for the match against Danai, but he has nothing to lose and he'll have support from his home crowd and I'm expecting a tough match. But I don't care if I win in three sets or five sets. I'll just be very happy if I win and make the first point for my country. "Then, Paradorn is a great character who I know very well from playing the tournaments, and it could be a very important match against him on Sunday. We'll see what happens." While Udomchoke plays as the number two singles player, no less than three fifths of the Thai team is composed of the Srichaphan family, surely a unique situation. Paradorn plays as the number one singles player, and father Chanachai captains the team. Paradorn faces Bohdan Ulihrach in the second match of the opening day. Ranked 139, Ulihrach is favoured above 109th ranked Tomas Berdych by Czech captain Cyril Suk. "They are both the same quality, both very good, and Berdych is an upcoming star. But Bohdan has played quite a few times in the Davis Cup so I've chosen him for his experience," Suk explained. A hero in his homeland, Paradorn knows he has a massive burden on his shoulders as the only truly world-class player on the Thai team. But he is putting a brave face on it. "It's always going to be tough, and this is only our second time trying to qualifying for the World Group," he said. "The Czech team is very strong, but it's not like I'm playing the team. It's my team playing the team. There's a chance to win, especially with the fans behind us. It's 50/50. We expect to play well and not expect to win, and then we see what happens." Novak agrees that, in Davis Cup, it is always wise to expect the unexpected, and he is certainly not taking victory for granted. "Maybe we have much more experience, but in the Davis Cup you never know what is going to happen. It's a team competition and everything is open. They have nothing to lose. We are favourites, but we're expecting a tough match," he cautioned. After the opening day, Narathorn Srichaphan and Attapol Rithiwattanpong, both with a doubles ranking of 1670, will face 75th ranked Novak and 14th ranked Rikl in Saturday's doubles. On Sunday, Paradorn Srichaphan takes on Novak in the first of the reverse singles, with Udomchoke playing Ulihrach in the closing match. -- 閉著眼睛沿著走廊、廣場、小巷前進。小巷裡有三顆星星在密謀。 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.230.114.219 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 140.115.229.71 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 118.167.180.245
