Limbo (Christian)
Early Christians had pangs of conscience when it came to damning those virtuous souls who died before learning of Christ. Limbo was a place of no pain, sometimes situated by its authors in Hell, sometimes in another place entirely. Pagans who ended up here along with the unbaptized infants
simply never knew the Beatific Vision. God did not punish them nor did he
allow them to see Him or live in Heaven.
There is an amusing anecdote told of a Christian missionary who, after
delivering the good news to a pagan people, was asked "If we did not know about
Christ and Heaven, would we go to Hell?" The minister thought for a moment and
said "No, not if you did not know." "Then why did you tell us?"
