China Airlines has filed a lawsuit against the Boeing Co. over alleged skin
damage to a 747-400, reports Bloomberg. The Taiwan-based carrier seeks $7.5
million from the Chicago-based aerospace company.
The airline says it followed Boeing’s maintenance instructions, repairing
the fuselage twice. But the carrier contends in its suit that it found “
scribe mark damage” on the fuselage of a 747-400, which it bought in 1990.
That damage, China Airlines alleges, constitutes a safety risk.
Boeing reportedly bought the plane back from China Airlines at a $7.5 million
discount. But the carrier says Boeing failed to provide sufficient
maintenance instructions that would have allowed China Airlines to avoid the
fuselage damage.

China Airlines sues over damaged jet
Boeing was sued by China Airlines of Taiwan seeking $7.5 million for
maintenance damage to the fuselage of a 747-400 jetliner.
The Taipei-based carrier contends in a Washington state court suit filed Oct.
23 in Seattle that it took delivery of the plane in 1990 and twice followed
Boeing's maintenance-manual procedures to scrape sealant from the plane's
skin.
"China Air inspected the fuselage" of the aircraft later and "discovered
scribe mark damage" that "constituted a significant safety of flight risk,"
according to the suit, which says Boeing bought the plane back at a $7.5
million discount.
The discount from fair-market value "represented the cost to repair the skin
damage," yet Boeing didn't provide adequate maintenance instructions to avoid
damage, China Airlines said in the complaint.
Boeing spokesman Tim Neale said the company couldn't immediately comment on
the lawsuit.
