A Spanair McDonnell Douglas MD-82, registration EC-HFP performing flight
JK5022 from Madrid,SP to Las Palmas,CI (Spain) with 163 passengers, has gone
off the runway 36L of Madrid's Barajas Airport during takeoff at 14:14 local
(12:14Z). The fuselage broke up in at least two parts.

Airport Officials report fatalities and injuries. First pictures show the
airplane on fire with a large plume of smoke over the airport. Local news
agencies report 50 fatalities and 40 injuries quoting witnesses, that the
left hand engine was on fire before the airplane crashed.
