Northwest/Delta to end Gatwick-Detroit services
Northwest Airlines has announced that it is to end its non-stop service from
London Gatwick to Detroit with effect from 11 January 2009. Delta, which
recently merged with Northwest after receiving approval form the US
authorities, says it will continue to serve Atlanta and Cincinnati from
London Gatwick.
Northwest’s service between London Heathrow and Detroit, which the airline
launched in the wake of the open skies deal between the US and the European
Union at the beginning of May, will continue. British Airways cancelled its
London-Detroit services in March 2008, citing woes in the American car
industry.
Last week, the airlines announced they were to terminate non-stop services
between Heathrow and Seattle, which were only launched at the beginning of
June, also as a result of the opening up of Heathrow to more US carriers.
