KUALA LUMPUR—Malaysian Airline System Bhd. Tuesday agreed to purchase up to
25 new Airbus A330-300 widebody aircraft with a list price of $5 billion,
funded partly by a $777 million rights offering.

The national carrier's chief executive, Azmil Zahruddin, said the agreement
is for 15 firm orders and an option for a further 10 planes.

The company also said it plans to raise 2.67 billion Malaysian ringgit ($777
million) in a rights issue to purchase aircraft, repay debt and to meet
working capital requirements. Mr. Azmil said the one-for-one rights issue, to
be priced at 1.60 ringgit each, is expected to be completed in the first
quarter.

The airline's shares, which were halted Tuesday, last traded at 3.05 ringgit.

The airline said that the planes will be delivered between 2011 and 2016. The
new planes will be financed via borrowings and the rights issue, and will be
used to replace older widebody aircraft, as well as to add new capacity, Mr.
Azmil said.

They will serve the growing markets of South Asia, China, North Asia,
Australia and Middle East, he added.

Airbus senior vice-president for sales and customer affairs Asia, Thomas
Friedberger, said the more fuel-efficient aircraft will lower the airline's
operating costs. Airbus is a unit of European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co.

Mr. Azmil also said Airbus will compensate Malaysian Air with over 300
million ringgit for the late delivery of its A380 super jumbo aircraft. The
first plane, which was scheduled for delivery in January 2011, will now be
delivered eight months late in August 2011.

The airline said that when it receives the 15 A330-300 aircraft, it expects
to gain savings of 300 million ringgit a year due to lower fuel and operating
costs.

"By 2016, all the aircraft we have ordered will be in and we expect to have
one of the youngest, most fuel efficient and environmentally friendly fleets
in Asia," Mr. Azmil said.

Separately, the company said that it has signed agreements with Penerbangan
Malaysia to take over its parent's current order for six A380s as well as two
Boeing Co. 777 and two 747 aircraft for 3.19 billion ringgit.

Mr. Azmil added that the carrier plans to start owning more of its fleet.
Currently, most of the airline's planes are leased from parent Penerbangan
Malaysia.
