Airshow 2010: Boeing's 787 Dreamliner well be one of the big draws.
The air show, which runs from July 19 to 25, is one of the biggest events in
the aerospace and defence industry's calender, as well as a mecca for
enthuisiasts of eveything that takes off and touches down.
This year promises a number of firsts, with Boeing's 787 making its
international debut from July 18 to 20. Last year's Paris air show was awash
with rumours that the 787 would make an appearance, but it has taken another
12 months for it to happen.
It is a mid-sized plane designed to fly long distances. As a result, airlines
flocked to buy it, and it became Boeing's fastest-selling model with more
than 800 ordered.
However, the innovative design and materials, and the decision to hand over
more production responsibility to suppliers, resulted in delays of more than
two years, from an initial delivery date of 2008.
Airbus will be displaying its A400M transport plane, which has already had a
showing at the Berlin airshow in June, at a critical time in the funding
talks between the company and the nations buying the aircraft.
The plane's distinctive four-propeller appearance and the chance to see the
world's newest turbo prop engine in action are likely to prove a big draw.
The A400M will be flying, but the 787 will not.
The big plane makers and engine manufacturers like Rolls-Royce will also hope
to have more orders to unveil than at Paris last year.
That show came in the depths of the airline industry downturn, with many
carriers struggling to stay solvent. This year, there is some optimism that
the aviation cycle could be on the up again.
