ET.Airbus Still Sees Decision On New Engine For A320 By Year-End PARIS (Dow Jones)--European commercial aircraft builder still plans to take a decision by year-end to fit more fuel-efficient engines to its family of medium-range A320 jets, an Airbus spokesman said Friday. An unsourced report in the daily newspaper Les Echos on Friday said a meeting of Airbus's top management earlier this week had postponed a decision to re-enginethe single-aisle jets, a move that would require an investment of at least $1 billion. Some Airbus officials had indicated earlier this year that the company was aiming for a decision by mid-year, but the deadline then shifted to the autumn. "We have said we will decide this year, and we will decide when we're ready and all the data for a proper evaluation are on the table," Airbus spokesman Stefan Schaffrath told Dow Jones Newswires. Airbus Chief Executive Tom Enders is being extra-careful about the need to avoid overstretching the company's engineering resources, as happened with previous aircraft programs. Airbus is just starting to build its new A350 XWB wide-bodied jetliner, and is still grappling with computer software problems in its A400M military airlifter program, and Enders wants to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. However, the industrial ramp-up of the A380 superjumbo is now getting back on track after manufacturing issues absorbed massive engineering resources and caused costly delays. "The resources issue is of utmost importance for our top management to clarify," Schaffrath said. Pressure on Airbus to come up with a solution to make the A320 more economical for airlines to operate - a new engine and other improvements such as new winglets could cut fuel consumption by around 15% - has ebbed since transatlantic rival Boeing Co (BA) said earlier this week that a similar move to re-engine its fast-selling 737 family could be pushed back to 2011. Both manufacturers agree they will have to replace their medium-range aircraft families around the middle of the next decade if they want to remain a technological step ahead of emerging competition from China, Brazil and Canada. They are reluctant to invest large amounts of money for what would essentially be a temporary solution over 10 years or so, especially when the A320 and 737 are selling so well and they have huge order backlogs spanning several years of production. http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20101008-704515.html -- 航空/鐵道/都市資料找不到?
