If my understanding of the Salary Cap FAQ is correct: The Blazers may apply, should they choose to do so, for a salary cap exception (see http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#19). Since Darius became disabled (for hoops purposes) prior to November 30, the exception can be applied for this year. The exception would be, in this case, for 50% of Darius's salary (as that figure is lower than the average salary). Note that the league has to approve such an exception--and hasn't done so in the past. (Not sure why). If Darius retires due to medical reasons, and the league approves, his salary can come off the cap one year after the injury or illness. http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#53 (When the one-year clock starts in Darius' case, I don't know). Again, league approval is needed.
