Arena's owners put forth offer
Blazers - Officials say both sides are in talks to jointly sell the Rose
Garden and the team

The owners of the Rose Garden approached Portland Trail Blazers owner Paul
Allen's investment company in recent weeks with an offer to work together to
sell the team and the arena, a representative of the arena group said Monday.
Richard Josephson, a board member for Portland Arena Management, declined to
give specifics other than to say discussions are continuing with Allen's
Vulcan Inc. investment firm. He said the arena owners made the proposal after
NBA Commissioner David Stern dropped efforts March 30 to broker a deal
between the arena and its primary tenant.
Although the idea to sell the team and arena together is not new, the
building's owners have only now publicly stated that they put forth their own
offer. The arena owners have been chastised by Stern and Allen for not being
constructive in talks on how to fix the team's financial problems.
Josephson disagreed, saying the arena owners are looking out for their
investors. "The funds that went to build the arena came from pension funds,
retirement funds and life insurance policyholders," he said. "We have a
fiduciary duty to protect their interests."
Andy Brimmer, a Vulcan spokesman, said only that the two sides were exploring
a joint sale as part of overall discussions "about ways to ensure the future
viability of the Trail Blazers in Portland." He declined further comment on
the proposal.
In the meantime, former Trail Blazer Terry Porter plans to meet today and
Wednesday with local investors who might be interested in helping buy the
team and the arena. He's also scheduled to meet Wednesday afternoon with
Portland Mayor Tom Potter.
