The Portland Trail Blazers announced today that the club has signed Forward
Sergei Monia to a multi-year contract. Terms of the agreement were not
disclosed.
Monia, a 6-8, 220-pound native of Saratov, Russia, was originally drafted by
the Trail Blazers with the 23rd overall selection in the 2004 NBA Draft, a
pick acquired by Memphis as part of the Bonzi Wells trade and played the
2004-05 season for CSKA in Moscow.
His club won its third consecutive Russian National Championship and advanced
to the European Final Four. For the season, Monia played in 20 games,
averaging 13.5 minutes and 5.3 points per game.
The 22-year-old Monia began playing in the Autodorozhnik Saratov juniors and
made his debut with the Saratov seniors in 2000-01 before signing with CSKA
Moscow in 2002-03.
His career is highlighted by tours with the Russian Junior National Team that
played at the 2000 European Junior Championship. He has also played at the
2002 European under-20 Championship and was a member of the Russian National
Team.
