Portland:

Round 1: Sebastian Telfair, PG, High School (#13)
Round 1: Viktor Khryapa, SF, Russia (Acquired the rights to
the #22 pick (Khryapa) from New Jersey for 3 million and
Eddie Gill)
Round 1: Sergei Monya, SG, CSKA Moscow (#23)
Round 2: Ha Seung Jin, Center, South Korea (#46)

Grade: D+

Their draft made absolutely no sense for them whatsoever.
They reached between 5-10 spots to take two of their picks
and then drafted Khryapa and Monya next to each other despite
the fact that they duplicate each other and they could have
gotten a more athletic, offensive minded player to fill their
scoring needs. They essentially paid three million dollars
for the right to reach for Khryapa, who no one is going to buy
a luxury box to watch.

Picking Telfair just somehow reeks of a move that’s unrelated
to basketball despite the fact that he’s going to end up
becoming a very good player in 2-3 years (but probably not
better than other players he went ahead of, who also fill
Portland’s needs a lot better and sooner). Adidas must have
gotten in Jay Bilas’ pocket too because just a little while
back he was saying that Rajon Rondo (high school point guard
committed to Kentucky) is a much better player then Telfair;
but in spite of that he said Portland made the right choice.
According to Bilas I guess Rondo should have been a top 10 pick
in this draft.

Picking up Monya at 23 really saved this draft for them and
that’s a move they will benefit from down the road if he can
get out of his contract in Russia with the depleted salary he'll
be making. With all the hoopla ESPN made about milking Jameer
Nelson’s grief for every rating decimal they could get, they
forgot to mention that Monya was the last player left in the
green room, along with Pavel Podkolzine. That’s the type of
thing you might consider as a wake up call for European players
and their greedy agents, the same kind of slap in the face that
a lot of people were hoping a high school player would get.

At 46, Jin was a nice pick. You can’t go wrong that late in
the draft with a guy that size.
