David Stern says he is willing to re-enter negotiations to sell the Trail
Blazers. But the NBA commissioner indicates he needs more budge from
officials representing Portland Arena Management, which owns and operates the
Rose Garden.
Stern moved away from the process March 30, saying he had a prospective
buyer for the Blazers and the Rose Garden but PAM representatives hadn’t
taken the offer seriously.
“There is a fair amount of scrambling going on from the other side (PAM)
of this,” Stern said during a Thursday teleconference.
“We made a definitive proposal, authorized by me, made by (NBA Executive
Vice President) Joel Litvin, with respect to the decision we had before us.
The best (PAM) could say was, it wasn’t a real proposal because David wasn’
t on the phone. That will tell you (something about) the other side.
“We very much wanted to get this done. We thought it was best to get it
done soon … based upon the scramble that went on in response to some direct,
honest dialogue we tried to start, we were a little disappointed.”
Stern says he is available for future help if beckoned by the respective
parties.
“I would never say never with respect to getting involved,” he says. “
We know the best thing that could be done for the city of Portland is for the
team and the building to be sold as a single enterprise. I don’t know
whether the window is open or closed.
“I would like to think the parties will somehow find a way to work that
out themselves. If that happens, great. If they ask us to get involved again,
we’ll be happy to. Our goal is to keep the team in Portland under unified
ownership, but someone has to reach out to us to tell us that’s doable.”
