NY Post:
CHICAGO MOVIE MAY NEVER BE
Efforts to produce a movie version of the Broadway hit musical Chicago
appear to be falling apart, the New York Post reported today, citing an
unnamed insider. The newspaper said that producer Marty Richards and Miramax
boss Harvey Weinstein are at odds over the film. Director Nicholas Hytner,
who had already rejected the first two drafts of a screenplay by Larry
Gelbart, has reportedly now turned down a third by Wendy Wasserstein. Hytner,
the Post said, is also adamantly opposed to having Goldie Hawn in a lead
role, a casting decision originally made by Weinstein. In fact, said the
Post, Weinstein has "cooled" on the project because of its ballooning budget,
and Richards has already begun shopping it to other studios.
