LIGHTS GO OUT ON BROADWAY
STAGEHAND STRIKE CLOSES MOST THEATERS
Broadway is temporarily out of business.
Thousands of Broadway stagehands walked off the job today, leaving 26
theaters in the dark and thousands of ticket holders disappointed.
Stagehand union Local 1 decided to go on strike after three months of heated
negotiations with producers and theater owners over wages and hiring
practices.
Although four musicals will go on as planned – including "Mary Poppins" and
"Young Frankenstein" – the curtain will remain closed on most Broadway
performances.
The League of American Theaters and Producers said all ticketholders will be
reimbursed during the strike, which could last for days or even weeks.
