Backstreet Boys, Never Gone (* * * out of four) Five years ago, the Backstreet
Boys' resolve not to abandon perky pop and romantic ballads even as their
peers veered into edgier urban territory didn't seem prudent to many industry
insiders. But the smartly produced, cannily sung material on their first
studio CD since 2000's Black & Blue should strengthen the adult-contemporary
audience that has always been a solid part of this now-grown-up boy band's
base. Whether crooning the swooning Safest Place to Hide or digging into more
rhythmic tracks such as Poster Girl and the sinuous My Beautiful Woman,
the group sounds as comfortable and accessible as ever. -Elysa Gardner
