China’s shuttlers, lead by Bao Chunlai, had the perfect warm up ahead
of the All England Championships this week when they bagged four of the
five titles at stake at the YONEX German Open at the RWE Sporthalle in
Mulheim an der Ruhr.
Bao took the men’s singles title while Wang Xin was triumphant in the
women’s singles and Ma Jin-Wang Xiaoli and Chai Biao-Zhang Nan bagging
the women’s doubles and men’s doubles respectively.
The only title to escape the mighty Chinese was the mixed doubles crown
which went to Hong Kong’s Yohan Hadikusumo-Ying Suet Tse who benefited
from Robert Blair-Imogen Bankier’s early retirement from the match.
Bao needed just 33 minutes to beat teammate Chen Long in the final,
registering a 21-13, 21-10 win to win the title. Chen Long, a former
world junior champion, was hardly in the game and was a pale shadow of
the player who beat Malaysia’s Hafiz Hashim in the semi-finals on Saturday.
Instead, it was Bao who showed a greater array of strokes and composure
to deny the youngster any chance of coming into the game.
Both Bao and Chen Long are down to compete in the All England and open
their campaign against Germany’s Marc Zwiebler and Denmark’s Jan Jorgensen
respectively.
In the men’s doubles, Chai Biao-Zhang Nan, who burst onto the scene last
year, beat Chinese Taipei’s Cheng Hung Lin-Lin Yu Lang 17-21, 21-13, 21-15
to lift the title.
The Chinese, who play their first match in Birmingham against Indonesia’s
Alvent Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan, took advantage of a nervy display from their
opponents, especially in the third game, to win in 50 minutes.
In the women’s singles, local hope Juliane Schenk took the fight to Wang Xin
but had to bow out 17-21, 18-21 while Ma Jin-Wang Xiaoli beat compatriots Shu
Cheng-Zhao Yunlei 24-22, 21-15 to win the women’s doubles title.
