這就是人生 That's the way the ball bounces.

美國職棒大聯盟季後賽，洋基隊被老虎隊淘汰，道奇隊也被大都會隊直落三出局。王
建民和郭泓志季後賽之旅，一夕叫停。王建民憑藉19勝，晉級「賽揚獎」級投手，睥
睨大聯盟。道奇的郭泓志，以區區一勝資歷，於季後賽出戰生涯290勝的大都會勝投
葛拉文，也是百年傳奇。
棒壇講求實力（to play hardball），是最現實的地方。台灣球迷沉醉在王建民的勝
投，旅日好手張誌家卻遭到西武隊解約，而淚灑球場。能夠擠進大聯盟，個個都是頂
尖好手，因此「勝敗乃兵家常事」（On any given Sunday, any team in our
league can beat another team.）。努力不懈得不到佳績，面臨失業威脅，球壇視
為當然，並以「這就是人生」（That is the way the ball bounces.）自勉。
勝敗乃兵家常事
例：”Our competitors are very aggressive in trying to beat us, they are
playing hardball.”「隊手攻勢猛烈，想置我們於死地。」
”The manager took that chance and got screwed and sometimes that is the
way the ball bounces.” 「經理放手一搏，但慘遭失敗。只能怪他時運不濟。」
王建民以年薪35萬美元（rookie salary）投出19勝，是物超所值的球員，日後加薪
幅度不知，但絕對有厚望。球壇術語「球場數字」（ballpark fig-ures），正好用
來形容此事。早年轉播球賽，對於未飛出全壘打牆、無法估算距離的長打，常以”in
the ballpark”（尚在球場以內）形容，後來延用在商場，就變成”ballpark
figures”（大概抓個數字）之意。
例：” Unfortunately I can only give you ballpark figures today.” 「不好
意思，今天我只能給你一個約略的數字而已。」
王建民今年創下紀錄，榮登美國大聯盟亞洲勝投王，國人無不盼望他乘勝追擊，百戰
百勝（on a winning streak），甚至達到無人可以超越的成績（shooting for the
moon）。

例：” When on a winning streak, gamblers are of-ten tempted to
drastically increase their bet sizes and take short-cuts with their
homework.” 「手氣好的時候，賭客就會加大額度，也變得冒進一些。」
”If you combine the iPod Mini with the Shuffle, it really says Apple is
shooting for the moon here, and is really going after getting as much of
this market as it can.” 「蘋果電腦正在研發世上最小的數位音樂播放器，準備
拿下整個市場。」
王建民能夠以二年級生榮登勝投王，與洋基隊季後賽被淘汰出局，很重要的原因是其
豪華打線能否發揮火力。勝利的決定因素，投打、防備、教練運籌以及球迷營造的主
場優勢，無一不重要，而以「團隊精神」（Esprit de corps、camaraderie）整個串
連起來，正如孫子兵法所言：「上下同欲者，勝」。歸功勝利於投手一人（one man
show），不但不公平，也不切實際。
例：”Our CEO believes that one key attribute of the company that needs to
be preserved and renewed is esprit de corps.”「公司內部最需要發揚光大的
，就是親愛精誠的團結精神。」
”We are proud and happy that esprit de corps a-gain worked out perfectly,
proving that baseball is not a one man show but team work.”「很高興看到
大家同舟一命，證明了棒球是團體活動，而不是個人秀。」
追求勝利 要有運動精神
因為優勝的果實甜美（There is no second place winner.），於是很多人篤信「只
為勝利，不擇手段」（Win at all cost.），忘卻「運動精神」（sports-manship）
。美國最膾炙人口的體壇故事，是前聖母大學橄欖球員George Gipp臨終前，向教練
Knute Rockne交待，希望隊友面對強敵時，要想到死去的他，「為他好好打勝一場球
」（Win the one for the Gipper.）。教練果然以此故事，激勵隊員，力克強敵。
後來這個故事還搬上螢幕，飾演球員Gipper的演員雷根，後來還當上美國總統，這句
話更成了他的競選口號。
例：”It is not whether you win or lose. It is how you play the game.”「
輸贏不是重點，運動精神才是重點。」
”Tell'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the
Gipper.” 「讓我們齊心對外，打贏這場戰爭！」（作者是陸軍官校語言中心主任)
