Boeing May Open Asia Conversion Site to Quickly Add 767s to
Amazon's Cargo Fleet

Oct. 12--Air-cargo company Atlas Air onTuesday tapped Boeing to convert nine
used 767 passenger airplanes into freighters that Atlas will fly as part of
its 20-jet Prime Air fleet for Amazon.
To deliver the freighters more quickly, an industry insider said, Boeing may
open a new 767 freighter-conversion line to take on some of the work at one
of its existing joint venture aircraft-modification facilities in China or
Taiwan.
Atlas spokeswoman Bonnie Rodney said the company started leasing and flying
its first 767 for Amazon in August.
"The remaining 19 aircraft that we will lease to and operate for Amazon are
expected to enter service through 2018," Rodney said.
She said Atlas has acquired "the vast majority" of the 20 used passenger
aircraft it will need for the Amazon contract and has secured all of the
necessary slots at freighter-conversion facilities, including the nine in
Tuesday's announcement with Boeing.
Atlas, based in Purchase, N.Y., announced in May that it would lease 20
Boeing 767-300s to Amazon, as the online retail giant moves to aggressively
expand its package-delivery logistics with its own dedicated air fleet.
Those planes were in addition to the 20 767 jets Amazon agreed to lease in
March from freight carrier Air Transport Services Group (ATSG) of Wilmington,
Ohio.
Boeing's current market outlook forecasts a need for 400 widebody jet
conversions over the next 20 years, with strong demand for 767 freighter
conversions due to a rise in e-commerce.
Boeing currently completes all its passenger-to-freighter-jet conversions at
a facility in Singapore, at a joint venture with aircraft-maintenance firm ST
Aero.
However, demand for 767 freighter conversions -- not only from Amazon but
also from express package carriers such as FedEx, UPS and Germany's DHL for
operation in the U.S. and in Asia -- is high enough that Boeing has been
studying whether to open a second conversion line.
A senior air-cargo executive, who asked not to be identified because of
continuing business with Boeing, said the jet maker is far along in an
approval process to open a second 767 conversion line, either at its
maintenance joint venture with China Eastern Airlines in Shanghai or at
Evergreen Aviation Technologies in Taipei, Taiwan -- with the latter now
favored.
Boeing spokeswoman Cynthia Reynaud on Tuesday declined to say where the Atlas
planes will be converted.
Used 767 airliners can be acquired for $10 million or less, and converting
them to freighters costs another $15 million or so.
