生物科技蔓延恐慌

在美國、加拿大、歐洲和日本所做的民調顯示，由於愈來愈多生物科技專家從
事複製人和基因改造的研究，使這些地區的民眾對生物科技的支持度下滑。

美國「自然生物科技」專業期刊在九月號的一篇報導中指出，今年四月和五月
對一千零二名美國民眾所做的調查顯示，近百分之五十三受訪者相信基因工程
在未來廿年將對人類生活有正面貢獻。但有三成受訪者認為基因工程會「使生
活更糟」。

此外，民眾對基因工程的支持度遠低於電信、太陽能、網路和太空探測等其他
新科技，只比核能受歡迎。

這項調查報告的作者蘇珊娜‧普里斯特女士指出，民眾對基因工程支持度「溫
和下滑」的調查結果，與民眾對基因工程的道德疑慮日增相符合。

去年十一月對歐洲聯盟境內一萬六千名民眾所做的調查也得到類似結果，當時
基因改造食物正在歐盟造成恐慌。

根據歐盟的民調，只有百分之四十六受訪者對生物科技的正面角色感到樂觀，
低於一九九六年的百分之五十及一九九三年的百分之五十三。另外，今年二月
對一千名加拿大民眾所做的調查顯示，把生物科技與複製科技聯想在一起的受
訪者比一九九七年增加近四倍。

「自然生物科技」期刊並指出，許多受訪者認為生物科技令人擔憂，或是在道
德上令人難以接受。

生物科技在日本的支持度也下滑。今年一項對兩百九十七名日本民眾所做的調
查顯示，百分之五十九受訪者對生物科技持正面看法，高於一九九七年的百分
之五十四。但有百分之廿四受訪者認為生物科技會使生活更壞，遠高於
一九九七年的百分之十二。

In the past decade.hundreds of genetically designed products and new
strains of organisms have been developed.
But all new technologies, developments in DNA technology have ethical
overtones.
For example, obtaining a complete map of the human genome will open
the door for significant advances in gene therapy.
It will also raise significant ethical questions.
Who should have the right to examine someone else's genes?
So it's reasonable to reject fear.
However, the power of genetic engineering-our ability to profoundly
and rapidly alter species that have been evolving for millennia-demands
that we proceed with humility and caution.

I don't think the really problem will be done by us. But people who
could use the power from genetic engineering are not only scientists or
researchers. It's not easy to talk about humility and integrity with
business men or politician. And also, power could change everything being
in the humanity terribly.
Human nature is a quite damn thing.
