Rich Axel of Columbia Univeristy just won this year's Nobel Prize.
An M.D. from Johns Hopkins, he ended up studying developmental
biology of fruitflies. His primary achievement is to clone the
whole family of fruitfly olfactory receptor genes.
Here are two of his most impactful articles in recent years:
A spatial map of olfactory receptor expression in the
Drosophila antenna.
Cell 96:725 (1999).
An olfactory sensory map in the fly brain.
Cell 102:147 (2000).
