Role of the Sigma Factor in Transcription Initiation in the Absence of Core
RNA Polymerase

We reported in this paper a series of experiments aimed at elucidating the
exact function of the bacterial transcriptional specificity factor sigma (σ)
and the importance of core RNA polymerase in modulating σ function. We
recently identified errors where original data were processed inappropriately
by the first author; these errors affect several of the figures. Thus, we
wish to retract this paper. We continue to stand by the conclusions of the
paper, and experiments replicating these results and conclusions will be
verified and submitted for peer review at a future date. We are happy to
provide reagents to anyone who wishes to repeat our experiments and would
like to apologize to the scientific community for any inconvenience these
errors may have caused.
