Irish superstars tell of their fury that the band were never able to say
a proper farewell to their legion of fans
Former members of boy bank Boyzone have launched a blistering TV attack
on Ronan Keating, blaming him for their failure to say a proper goodbye
to their legion of ans.
Pop idol Keith Duffy claimed die-hard fans felt cheated,
while Stephen Gately branded it as "unfair" because they were unable
to give fans a final send-off.
Ronan Keating is the only former band member who does not appear on
the no-holds-barred Granada documentary, set to be broadcast soon.
In the show, Gately, Duffy, Mickey Graham and Shane Lynch believed
they were just taking a year out and that they would be back recording again
afterwards.
And questions are asked over how Keating - who plays Belfast this Tuesday -
became the group's front man and why it was HIS idea not to hold a press
conference about the year-out decision.
The programme, which charts Boyzone's rise to fame, also features Shane Lynch
branding top Irish TV chat show host Gay Byrne as a w*****.
And viewers also hear Stephen Gately talk about his fear of wrecking the
band's career because of his homosexuality.
Smash! The Story of Boyzone, opens with the group's final concert at the
Point Depot in Dublin in January 2000.
Ironically, Ronan Keating tells the thousands of screaming young girl fans:
"Thank you so much for the last six years. It has been unbelievable.
Thank you so much. But we're not going anywhere, believe me,
Boyzone is stronger than it's ever been before".
