Ronan Keating, Jason Donavon, and Darren Day are battling to land the lead
role in a forthcoming stage musical.
The singing stars are keen to star in a forthcoming production of Billy Liar,
set to open in London’s West End next spring, according to UK newspaper The
Sun. After its initial run in London, the show is expected to enjoy an extended
run on Broadway in New York.
While Day’s previous stage experience makes him favourite to land the part,
Keating’s popularity would prove a huge selling point for the show.
The Sun quotes a theatre insider as saying: “While Ronan could ensure the fans
would come, he has never acted before and this would be a big test for him. But
Darren is determined this will be his chance to get to Broadway.”

KEATING has revealed that he has ditched ideas of an acting career after being
turned down for a number of top roles including a musical and a film.
According to Irish website ShowbizIreland.com, the squeaky clean pop star was
distraught when he discovered he had missed out on the lead role in the West
End adaptation of Billy Liar, which is reported to have gone to fellow Boyzone
star and close friend Stephen Gately.
In film, Ewan McGregor beat Ronan to the role of Nicole Kidman’s lover in Baz
Luhrman’s period drama, Moulin Rouge.
Ronan auditioned for the part but lost out to the high profile Scottish actor.
Ronan said: “I did consider going into acting but I have lost the only two
parts I have gone up for. First I lost Billy Liar. Then I was offered the lead
in Moulin Rouge opposite Nicole Kidman. I met with Baz but I eventually lost
the role to Ewan - which is kind of understandable- he is incredibly
talented.”
Ronan added that he would stick to the music. “I don’t think acting is for me.
It’s a different world and I can’t see that I have the patience to be any
good at it. I’ll just stick with the music – I seem to be better at that
anyway.”
The Irish star will be doubly disappointed since he was axed as manager of boy band Westlife earlier this week.
