Eight dreams, one goal
(FIFA.com) 31 May 2005
The hunt for a place in the last four of the 2005 Copa Libertadores is about
to begin in earnest. Eight sides from Brazil, Argentina and Mexico will be
in action this Wednesday and Thursday in the first leg of their respective
quarter-finals. The city of Tokyo and the FIFA Club World Championship are
getting closer by the game.
The corresponding return legs will take place on 14, 15 and 16 June as next
week sees the resumption of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers for Germany 2006.
Wednesday 1: All roads lead to Brazil
The first night’s entertainment comes exclusively from Brazil with all
three of their representatives in action. Atletico Paranaense welcome fellow
Brazilians Santos FC knowing it will be imperative to make home advantage
count. Meanwhile the country’s other contender, Sao Paulo, will have their
hands full with the visit of Mexico’s Tigres UANL.
The Estadio Joaquim America will be filled to capacity come 19:45 (local
time) in Curitiba to witness the clash of the 2004 national championship
winners and runners-up. Atletico Paranaense, fresh from seeing off Paraguay’s
Cerro Porteno in the last round, will have their work cut out if they are
to do the same against a full strength Santos that should include Brazilian
internationals Robinho and Ricardinho. Pele’s old side will be keen to
bring something – even just an away goal – back to the Vila Belmiro, where
they remain unbeaten in the competition after an emphatic win over Universidad
de Chile in the last round.
Ricardinho。
As appetising as that starter may be, the evening’s main course is most
definitely the late game between Sao Paulo and Tigres UANL at 21:45 (local
time) in the intimidating Estadio Morumbi. Santos coach Paulo Autuori will
be without Uruguay’s Diego Lugano, who is on international duty, but will
be able to call on Cicinho and Grafite, both of whom will join Carlos
Parreira’s squad later.
“Tigres are a very good team but they’re not accustomed to defending
systematically. We need to exploit the spaces they leave when they attack,”
the coach said.
Leonardo Alvarez’s Mexican side have been one of the sensations of this
year’s tournament and remain unbeaten on the road with two wins and two
draws thus far.
Leonardo Alvarez
Thursday 2: Argentina at the ready
The second night’s play has a distinctly Argentinian flavour to it with
several of the tournament favourites in action. First off their blocks will
be one of the surprise quarter-finalists, Banfield, who will be looking to
continue their historic campaign at the expense of former champions River
Plate. Kick off is at 20:00 (local time). Then at 20:30, Boca Juniors will
face the sternest of tests away to Mexico’s other representative, Guadalajara.
The opening match, Banfield versus River, is underpinned by a very strong
local rivalry. “We’re ready to go through to the next round. If they plan
to beat us, then they’re going to have to run twice as much as we are.
Hopefully they’ll have all their players available so there will no room
for excuses afterwards,” said the Banfield coach Julio Falcioni, raising
the temperature a couple of notches.
Meanwhile across town at the home of the Millonarios, Leonardo Astrada has
had to make do without the services of Chile’s Marcelo Salas and Uruguay’s
Carlos Diogo, both of whom are on international duty with their respective
countries. On the plus side, he will be able to count on Luis Gonzalez and
Javier Mascherano, who will join Jose Pekerman’s Argentina squad after the
match. One interesting statistic to ponder: River have not won in Banfield’s
stadium since 1997.
The feature game (link to feature) of the quarter-finals will be the clash
between Guadalajara Chivas and Boca Juniors in the Monumental Estadio Jalisco.
Benjamin Galindo’s Mexican side will be out to emulate their compatriots
Cruz Azul, who reached the final in 2001. For their part, Jorge Benitez’s
Boca go to Mexico in search of a result to take back to Buenos Aires for the
second leg. According to Diego Cagna, captain of the Xeneize, “Boca need to
deny Chivas possession, which is what they prize most. Then, we need to do
the same at home, where our supporters will make a big difference.” The
Boca captain has the statistics to back up his assertion: Boca have won all
four of their games at the Bombonera, scoring 14 goals and conceding none.
The quarter-final fixtures are as follows:
Wednesday 1
Atletico Paranaense (BRA) v Santos FC (BRA)
Sao Paulo (BRA) v Tigres UANL (MEX)
Thursday 2
Banfield (ARG) v River Plate (ARG)
Guadalajara Chivas (MEX) v Boca Juniors (ARG)
