BRAZIL 3-0 GREECE
16 June 2005
by FIFAworldcup.com
Brazil displayed their star quality as they made easy work of the challenge
of Greece with a 3-0 victory in their opening FIFA Confederations Cup match
in Leipzig's Zentralstadion. Adriano, Robinho and Juninho Pernambucano got
the goals as the South American champions climbed to the top of Group B.
A resilient Greece defence held out until the 42nd minute when Adriano opened
the scoring with a wonderful strike from distance. Moments after the restart
Carlos Alberto Parreira's side gained the cushion of a second goal thanks to
a fine stretching finish at the far post by Budweiser Man of the Match Robinho.
Substitute Juninho Pernambucano rounded off a good night's work on 81 minutes
by leaving Antonios Nikopolodis stranded with a free-kick perfectly positioned
inside the keeper's right-hand post.
Greeks begin brightly
The Greek underdogs set off at a whirlwind pace, seemingly intent on rocking
the favourites back on their heels. However, the Brazilian goal never came
under serious threat, a Sotirios Kyrgiakos header after two minutes aside.
After a sluggish opening, the South Americans gradually assumed control and
began to create openings with ominous regularity. Adriano loosed off a fifth-
minute warning shot, before Robinho warmed Greece keeper Antonios Nikopolidis'
gloves on 16 and 18 minutes.
The enthralled crowd in Leipzig saw the side lying top of the FIFA/Coca-Cola
World Ranking inexorably step up the pressure on the southern Europeans'
defence, deploying a fluid short-passing game in an effort to prise open
their opponents' rearguard.
However, the UEFA EURO 2004 champions stood tall in a characteristically
physical display, restricting the Brazilians to long-range efforts from
Robinho and Kaka as the game passed through an absorbing phase.
Just as the Greeks fancied their chances of holding out until the break,
Adriano supplied the breakthrough on 41 minutes. The Inter Milan hitman
evaded Kyrgiakos with a fine bodyswerve and blasted past Nikopolidis from
fully 25 metres to hand his side the lead.
Greece, thoroughly subdued going forward until this point, were now forced
to throw caution to the wind and almost grabbed an equaliser on the stroke
of half-time, but Angelos Charisteas, scorer of his side's winner in the
EURO 2004 final, fired wide from close range following Giourkas Seitaridis'
pinpoint cross deep into first-half stoppage time.
Play instantly switched to the other end but Robinho failed to convert an
inviting opportunity to double his side's lead after a sublime Ronaldinho
set-up. The teams went in at the break with the five-time FIFA World Cup
winners holding a deserved 1-0 lead.
Brazil show class
Rehhagel introduced Dimitrios Papadopoulos and Lukas Vintra for Zisis Vryzas
and Seitaridis in an effort to add drive and inspiration in the second period,
but the tactic crumbled to dust just a minute after the restart as Gilberto
steamrollered his way to the left edge of the box and flashed a pass to the
far post, where the lurking Robinho slid home to make the score 2-0.
The Greeks were visibly deflated by the sucker punch, and the South Americans
now had time and space for some exhibition stuff. Ronaldinho came close to a
third on 66 minutes but Nikopolodis gathered the midfielder's free-kick at
the second attempt. At the other end, Konstantinos Katsouranis whistled a
powerful drive narrowly wide of the upright on 69 minutes.
Parreira granted FIFA World Player of the Year Ronaldinho a breather and sent
on Renato in place of the silky playmaker, with Ricardo Oliveira taking over
from Adriano and Juninho Pernambucano replacing Kaka. Rehhagel took off
Zagorakis and handed Ioannis Amanatidis a run-out.
Juninho had only been on the field four minutes before opening his account,
burying a stunning free-kick from 20 yards with Nikopolodis rooted to his
line to make the score 3-0 with nine minutes remaining.
Brazil ran down the clock to complete the victory in a match offering good
entertainment, although all the flowing football came from the South Americans.
Greece will need to produce more convincing displays against Japan and Mexico
to retain any chance of progressing from the group.
