Argentina's young hopefuls ready for the off
(FIFA.com) 18 Nov 2003
As winners of three of the last four editions of the FIFA World Youth
Championship, Argentina are widely tipped as hot favourites for UAE 2003.
And Hugo Tocalli's charges have more than history behind them as they
prepare to head out east. FIFA.com reports on a young yet mature Albicelestes
side well capable of emulating their illustrious predecessors.
Picking a squad proved to be a tricky task for coach Tocalli, who had to
wait until the last minute to find out just who would be available for
selection. Fortunately, the clubs have finally surrendered most of their
stars and an impressive-looking squad list is the result. "Regrettably,
there's been a lot of talk about controversy and not much about football,"
the coach told the press.
Experience
In spite of his pre-tournament stress, Tocalli is in an enviable position.
Most of his players perform key roles for their teams in the country's
domestic first division. The only exception could be in goal, though
Gustavo Eberto of Boca Juniors and Banfield's Mariano Barbosa have both
put in solid performances between the sticks in the run-up to the event,
contributing to victory in the South American Youth Championship and the
Pan-American Games in Santo Domingo.
Bolstering the centre of defence will be Gonzalo Rodriguez of San Lorenzo
de Almagro. The young centre-half has not just tasted title glory in the
South American Youth Championship, he also enjoyed a brief run out with
the senior team recently, during which time he managed to score in a friendly
against Mexico. The 19-year-old has experience of international competition
at club level too, with San Lorenzo.
The midfield has to be one of this team's strongholds. Pablo Zabaleta of
San Lorenzo is outstanding, as are two of Argentina's greatest promises:
Osmar Ferreyra and Javier Mascherano of River Plate.
Ferreyra is very nippy player with a cultured left foot and can take up
one of several positions down that flank. Mascherano was a first team regular
during the South American tournament in Uruguay and is known for his mobility
and composure on the ball. "Any player he passes to twice in the same move,
I'll invite out to dinner," joked River Plate's chairman Jose Maria Aguilar
when asked about the central midfielder's ability.
Argentina Juniors also make a contribution to the squad, as they have done
throughout their history. Hugo Colace captained the Albicelestes during the
South American showpiece.
In the creative department we are set to see the skilful Jose Sosa and
Marcelo Carrusca of Estudiantes de la Plata and Walter Montillo, from
San Lorenzo again, who is currently setting Argentina's domestic league
alight. The slight but lavishly gifted Montillo is the playmaker of the
club that has sent most representatives to the national squad. He is quick
to appear in the opposition's box and as a result often gets himself on the
scoresheet. "I like how Pablo Aimar plays in my position. I look up to him
a lot. Playing in a world championship is like a dream come true for me,"
he said recently.
Hot feet
Argentina's real rising stars, however, are to be found up front: Fernando
Cavenaghi of River Plate, German Herrera of Rosario Central and Franco
Cangele of Boca Juniors, not to mention Carlos Tevez, who is currently
sidelined with an injury to his right knee but could recover to join up
in the second stage. Boca Juniors want him for the Toyota Cup game against
AC Milan in Tokyo on 14 December, while Tocalli has already handed him the
number 10 shirt to boost the chances of title success in the UAE 2003.
And the player himself "I want to be in both places, but unfortunately I'm
thinking more about my knee than anything. I'm still in pain."
Cavenaghi has been entrusted with the task of leading from the front on the
park. The team's captain and main goal scorer at only 19, the number 9 was
dubbed "River's Raul" by the Spanish press on the Argentinian team's recent
visit to Madrid. "It fills me with enormous pride to be recognised by
everyone, but it all means nothing if we don't come home with the title,"
he told FIFA.com. His neat ball skills, selflessness on the pitch and
excellent shot are just a few of his stunning qualities.
Herrera, the Rosario Central striker, is Cavenaghi's natural substitute,
while Cangele will take the place of Tevez if the latter fails to make
the UAE. Cangele is not short on talent, as he proved in the Pan-American
Games in Santo Domingo, where he dazzled as the champions' star player and
leading goal scorer.
