Renowned for his da- ring flamboyancy, he makes up for any lack of delicacy with a mixture of insouciant flair and technique. His involvement with the game can be seen from the fact that he is supposedly the only player who can claim to have made money on the weekly Sweepstakes game at the International Bridge Cen- ter in Taipei over the last few years. However, the rumour that he custo- marily rushed off to a final (he is graduating from the Chinese Cultural University with a degree in Physics and aiming for postgraduate studies) after putting down the dummy and returning before the end of the hand is somewhat exaggerated. Huang and Huang, who had opted for the Junior Trials instead of for the Open Trials for which they had individually qualified, favour a simple 2-over-1 game-force system with 5-card majors and strong no-trumps. Jerry C.Huang (黃正銳) One of the fast-rising stars of local bridgedom and known (and admired) for his serene imperturbability at the table, 22-year-old Jerry (now a Statistics major at Fu-Jen University) and his father, the great Patrick, form what is without doubt the strongest father-son partership in Taiwan. Indeed, the Huangs pere et fils more than once have played together in the Taiwanese Open Team Trials- and come rather close to winning- after appro- priate high finishes in selection events. The Australia and Chinese Taipei Youth teams met at the start of Round 2. The very first board contained a fascinating defensive position. J.C. led a spade to dummy's Jack and declarer tried a diamond to the King. A club to dummy's King, ducked by J.R., enabled Pocock to play another dia- mond to his Queen. The 10 of clubs now went to West's Jack and a spade was played to the King and Ace. A small club to the Ace on which East pitched a spade left this position: 7 10 9 2 J 6 - - 9 8 A 5 K Q 6 4 A 9 7 - 4 Q - J 8 7 3 - Q with declarer needing 2 tricks. J.R.Huang now cashed the Ace of diamonds which subjected south to a defensive triple squeeze and defeated the con- tract. A past winner of the National High-School Mathematics competition, he is now a graduate student at National Taiwan University and hoped to be- come a career mathematician. Playing seriously since his high-school days, the Panda actually reached the finals in Taiwan's Junior Trials in his first time out as a 17-year-old. Among his triumphs are the last National Youth Bridge Cup and the Pan-Collegiate bridge Championship last year. A rela- tively new pairing, Chen and Lin use a Eastern Scientific, 5-card major style with strong no-trumps. Ruey-Luen Lin At 24 the elder statesman of the team, Lin has been a fixture of local bridge tournaments since he started at NTU and joined the famed BTU (Bridge at Taiwan University) shortly thereafter. As a past president of the club and a stalwart of its teams that completely dominated collegiate bridge recently, he has an large assortment of trophies, including a recent se- cond-place in the Governor's Cup. As of the morning the team left Taipei for New Zealand, he just talked his advisor into signing his M.Sc thesis en route to a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from NTU. In one room the Taipei pair played in 2NT which made with an overtrick. This suggested a swing to Thailand which became closer to reality when Shahakiat Rungsa-Nguanwong became declarer in 3NT. Lin opened with the 2 of hearts which ran to declarer's Jack. A spade to the Queen followed and then the Queen of Diamonds ran to South's King. The defence now took their 3 heart tricks and Lin exited with a diamond to dummy's Jack. Declarer took two more diamond tricks to bring about this ending: J 9 - - A 10 3 Q 10 K 7 - - - - A 8 6 J 6 - - K 5 Declarer now played a club and Lin smothly dropped the King! Restricted choice tells us that this is probably singleton so South must have 3 spades. Back to the King of spades to finesse the 10 on the next round - one down and 5 imps to Taipei instead of 6 to Thailand. David Chu Chinese Taipei
