Return-Path: <rshih@Mercury.mcs.net> To: jmchen@math.purdue.edu Hi JM, We led the game until the last round, and we ended up with a blitz by winning 45 IMPs. There are several good agents online. You can use any search agent and look for "online agent", like in Yahoo, there are hundreds listed, Yahoo itself also has travel service. If you like the one I am using, it is http://www.flifo.com It is in fact purchased by 1 Travel, but still kept the same engine which I like most. Let me know if you need any help. YF played two hands magnificently, one trump coup and one complex end-play. Ray and I bid a 7c making and opps were in game only. As a result, we blitz the team that won Central state II swiss team last month. I will let yf tell you how he did it. I will go next week end to play BAM with Ray for sure. There is a remote chance that I will go for NA swiss team. The end-play hand was very neat. A76x Paul RHO Me LHO J97 1C Pass 1D 2H K Pass Pass 2S Pass AT985 3S Pass 4S All Pass 98x Tx AQTxxx x Opening lead: CJ xx QJTxx Jx KQ6xx An easy way to make is probably to KQJx cash DK, ruff club, DA, overruff D K8x with SA, SJ, SQ, ruff D and get a H Axxxx at the end. But I thought if CJ was 7 a singleton, then there was a good chance S32 and D43. Anyway, I cashed DK, SK, ruff D, SQ, ruff D with SA, on which LHO pitched last club. The end position is as follows. -- I led CT from dummy, intending to J97 pitch a loser if RHO didn't cover. -- Therefore, RHO covered with CQ. I T985 ruffed with small trump. LHO had to 9 -- overruff; otherwise I had 6 trumps, AQTxxx x 3 top tricks in minors and a H. So -- QJ LHO overruffed. Now, if LHO played HA, -- KQ6x then I had 2 tricks in hearts. If LHO Jx led a low heart, then I could win in K8x the dummy, lead C9, ruff RHO's CK, Ax cash DA, play a D and RHO had to lead -- clubs from 6x to dummy's 75 for making 5. LHO actually played HA. So I made only 4. At the other table, the contract was declared on the wrong side, and David and Ray got the first 3 tricks and declarer had no chance to make. The second high heart, East should pitch a high diamond. After he get in with CK, he would switch to a high spade. After west win the SK, he would play DA. Now it is an obvious cash-out situation, the play of dimond at East (paul's hand) unde DA is for count of the remaining diamonds. Therefore, west (JM) would know that diamond is cashable and declarer is 2722. We have found that by giving partner COUNT it makes the job much easier for partner to simply place the cards he needs IN PARTNER'S HAND that are necessary in order to beat a given hand. JM led the Club Q, declarer played the Ace and I played the 4. (I now fully realize that JM & YiFan prefer attitude at track one.) Declarer then played the Ace and King of Trump out of his hand and put the Club 7 on the table (The dummy's initial club holding was A1095.) On the play of the second high Trump I played the Diamond 5. JM played small and declarer, a strong player, then agonized for many seconds prior to playing the 10! This is important because, holding the 8 in his hand and doing what he did would be extremely unethical and a committee would have to be called. THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT IN JM'S MIND AS TO THE LOCATION OF THE CLUB 8! Upon winning the Club King I put the Diamond 6 on the table. At this point JM should have known that I was either 4-1-5-3 or 5-1-5-2. IF I had a doubleton club then I had 5 spades and declarer would have held the Club 8! (That was JM's thinking at the table, that declarer had 3 clubs). I believe that JM should reason out that IF I did not have the Diamond King I would not have made the return of the Diamond 6. Rather I would have cashed the Spade Ace first and then played a diamond, so that he knew to win the Diamond and then Cash the Spade King. Hope you appreciate my analysis along with the specifics of the hand. When playing at IMPs, either in KOs or Swiss Teams, COUNT has proven to be superior! Regards. As far as I know majority of top players in the worlds play this way. In ACBL standard, (1). Att (2) Count (3) Suit preference. When I started playing birdge in early 70s, I play count first. I had been lured into Attitute first gradually. Giving count only would not be sufficient for defense. Actually many of the top players now don't play count anymore (except a few exceptions. They play attitute and suit preference all the way. Yes, I missed the actual hand you had. You had 4 spades and 5 diamonds not 3S and 6D. I agree perfectly with you that Stanley Katz's long hesitaion is unethical and maybe director should be called upon. Nevertheless, the defense sequence I suggested would be logical if you indeed play attitute, count and then suit prefence. David Yang <hyang@eecs.uic.edu>, Yifan Yang <yfyang@math.uiuc.edu> Dear Paul, I have to say sorry, because I can not agree with you on several points of view from your analysis. :) ( <-- these are smilings --> :) ) Actually, I was confused by your D5 discarding, D6 switching, and the very first C4. I was totally confused on this board when it occurred. In Yifan and my agreement, with standard signal, pitching the lowest diamond discouraged diamond, hence denied king of diamond. D6 showed a high card and the count of the remaining cards in that suit, hence was an odd number, couldn't be four left. Moreover, as I told you, I saw C2 and C3 so that I was sure C4 was the smallest one in your hand. From my point of view, the only reason you didn't play a higher one was that you had exactly K4 doubleton. So I had no doubt as to the location of C8, it had to be in declarer's hand, even after the declarer's hesitation. I didn't know who the declarer was. I was not sure whether he was a good or a bad player. What I could do was to trust my partner. Okay, now I understand that the disaster came from the different priority about signals. We prefer the attitude while you prefer the count. I have too many things to deal with before going to Orlando. Let's discuss on it after we come back and finish the final exam. :) Sincerely yours, JM -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: ms10.hinet.net > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- < 作者: jmc (貪玩的小孩) 看板: BridgeClub 標題: Re: Harvey sectional 時間: Sat Nov 21 15:42:53 1998 Return-Path: <pss@starting-point.com> To: "Jiun-Ming Chen" <jmchen@math.purdue.edu> Cc: yfyang@math.uiuc.edu JM: You and YiFan are now my friends.
