Not-so-silent E
Eels man E gets naked - again
==========================================
With friends like Beck, Grant Lee Phillips and REM's
Peter Buck, who needs schmoozing? Certainly not E
(born Mark Oliver Everett), the man who's third Eels
record on Dreamworks, "Daisies of the Galaxy" is
released March 14.
"Daisies" continues E's tradition of incisive lyrics and
eclectic songwriting. Yet in a radical change of tone,
even when his subjects are sad, the atmosphere is
sunny with horns and strings. There's no big guitars,
but it's huge with charm and cheer.
"It became important that I make pure, sweet music,"
explains E.
"I'm much better at putting stuff in songs than actually
dealing with it," E explains.
The last Eels CD, "Electro-shock Blues", was a
devastating punch to the gut. Not only had his mother
just died, but his sister committed suicide, and E's
delicate songs navigated the treacherous territory that
remained behind. With songs like "Driving to Your
Funeral", it was pretty and very dark.
E's come around a corner now into the light; the songs
on "Daises" sparkle like cut glass. "I needed to make
something in love with life for my own sanity," he
says.
So "Flyswatter" opens with a plunking xylophone that
sounds like the one you played with as a kid, and "I
Like Birds" is a jaunty, folky guitar anthem. Even
"Packing Blankets," with lyrics about sorting out his
mom's stuff after she died, lilts with guitar and a happy
organ. It's like waking up after a storm with the sun
shining warm on your pillow.
E explains his new creation this way: "If Electro-Shock
Blues was the phone call in the middle of the night that
the world doesn't want to answer, then Daisies of the
Galaxy is the hotel wake-up call that says your lovely
breakfast is ready."
To get the feel just right, the upcoming Eels tour will
include E with longtime drummer Butch, plus some
string and horn players. In the south, you can catch
them on tour with Fiona Apple.
