They have lots of strong melodies and backing vocals. It's true to say they are heavier and punkier, but to be honest all that means is they use distortion where Murmur/Reckoning didn't. If the album has a fault then it's very similar throughout, much more than any R.E.M album, but then if you like 1 song, you'll like the whole thing. I like it a lot and it's unlikely R.E.M will ever be that energetic again so it fills a gap for me :) P.S.
